Later start of winter

November is the final month of the fall season. The typical previews of winter during this month were fairly minimal this year. November was much warmer than normal, especially in the Northwest and the Far North. In early November there were widespread records set for high values in the daily maximums and the overnight minimums. After some close to seasonal temperatures in mid-November a warm air mass crossed Northern Ontario from west to east in the third week and the “warmth” returned.

The Summer Season: Weather Contrasts and some Heat Warmings

Warmer than average temperatures prevailed across Northern Ontario in early June. For gardeners in the Northwest this warmth was accompanied by generous rain amounts, hence a good beginning to the growing season. However, a much cooler air mass moved into the region in the second week. Widespread frost was experienced in northern communities and morning temperatures just above the freezing point were common in locations like Fort Frances, Sioux Lookout, Dryden and Thunder Bay on June 10th and 11th.

Transitions to winter

(This is a new feature in Wawatay. The plan is to provide a brief look at some weather highlights from recent weeks in Northern Ontario, a glimpse of what could be happening next month and, sometimes, predictions for the coming season.)

November is usually included in the fall season. Winter waits on the sidelines until December 21 on most calendars and Environment Canada and other agencies decree that winter begins on December 1 and ends on February 28 (or a day later in Leap years).
