Aroland signs diamond deal

Aroland has given the green light to Toronto-based Debut Diamonds for the preparation for an exploration team to launch the first phase of a drill program that hopes to identify kimberlite pipes near the First Nation.
Scheduled to get under way mid-August, the drilling program will help determine if these high priority targets are diamond-bearing kimberlites.
The company said drilling has been designed to test distinct magnetic features that have been interpreted as potential kimberlite pipes, based on analysis of 2010 airborne survey data.

Aroland diamond agreement a result of ‘taking time to listen,’ says Debut CEO

A diamond exploration company that recently completed an exploration agreement with Aroland First Nation says taking the time to build a respectful relationship was key to the deal.
Chris Meraw, President of Debut Diamonds, told Wawatay News the agreement proves that if companies take the time to get agreements in place with First Nations, both sides can benefit.

Biindigaate takes over downtown Thunder Bay

The fourth annual Biindigaate Indigenous Film Festival not only showcased over 35 Aboriginal films from filmmakers both regionally and internationally, but also featured an art show and concerts at various venues in downtown Thunder Bay.
The festival held Sept. 27-30 at the Paramount Theatre also differed from previous years as having four days of programming instead of three.
“This year is really important,” said the festival’s media coordinator Jamie Monastyrski. “We’re taking over the whole downtown and promoting Indigenous arts.”

DFC launches first golf clinic

Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School recently added golf to the list of extracurricular activities offered to students.
A golf clinic has been being held at Whitewater Golf Club throughout the fall for interested students of the sport to try to swing a club for the first time. Whitewater had golf teachers on hand for the students, along with other golf enthusiasts from the Thunder Bay community to practice at the range, putting green and even play a few rounds on the course.

Filmmakers answering audience questions a hit at Biindigaate

A handful of directors who had their films screened at this years’ Biindigaate Indigenous Film Festival were on hand after their screening to answer audience questions.
The festival flew in these directors from all over Canada as a special feature to enhance the audience experience.
Attending filmmakers included Henry Beardy, Jeff Dorn, Adam Garnet Jones, Jason Hunter, Joe Ironstand, Lisa Jackson and Darlene Naponse.

Racism, safety and policing in Thunder Bay

As investigations continue on a number of incidents involving racism, harrasment and violence against First Nations people in Thunder Bay, the issue of urban safety continues to gain prominence.
At the forefront is the relationship between First Nations people and the Thunder Bay police, with organizations and individuals on both sides searching for a way forward.

Sharing traditional sciences at Confederation College

Traditional sciences were on display at Thunder Bay’s Confederation College during the Let’s Talk Science outreach program’s fourth annual Aboriginal Science Fair.
The science fair, held on April 12, showcased projects, solutions and innovations with direct Aboriginal content. Students from across the region in grades 8 to 12 were at the college to showcase their Aboriginal-themed science fair displays at the event.
