Wawatay and North Star Air launch new in-flight magazine

Wawatay Native Communications Society and North Star Air have recently partnered to launch Wanakoosh, a new quarterly in-flight magazine featuring stories from First Nation communities across Northwestern Ontario. North Star Air reached out to their Facebook & Twitter fans and ran a naming contest to help them with some name ideas for their new magazine. The winning name idea was Wanakoosh, which means “Star” in Oji-Cree.

The Tragically Hip announce final tour

Gord Downie, frontman of Canadian rock group, the Tragically Hip, has revealed that he is battling terminal brain cancer. The band posted news of Downie's condition on their website and social media channels early on May 24, along with the announcement of a final tour.

Downie and the Hip played a concert in Fort Albany First Nation back in February 2012 during the community’s Great Moon Gathering.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler, First Nation leaders and health officials appeared before the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on Thursday April 14 to present recommendations to address suicide and the health emergency in the NAN territory.

Was your child apprehended and taken into care? Are you wondering, as a parent, if you might have rights when your child has been apprehended or is in care?

As part of its public legal education to the First Nations members of Nishnawbe Aski Nation, Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation developed a Know Your Rights card on “If your child is apprehended (with or without police)” to educate and inform parents and caregivers about their rights.

Attawapiskat declares state of emergency over suicide crisis

Attawapiskat Chief Bruce Shisheesh declared a state of emergency calling for immediate action and long-term support following a dramatic increase in suicide attempts. The community has reported 101 suicide attempts since September 2015, with 28 attempts in March and 11 on Saturday alone.

Chief Bruce Shisheesh said there are suicide attempts just about every night calling it a “crisis mode.”

House fire claims nine lives in Pikangikum First Nation

A tragic house fire has claimed the lives of three children and six adults in Pikangikum First Nation. Ontario Provincial Police officials and the Office of the Fire Marshall are investigating the cause of a residential fire on Tuesday evening at approximately 11:45 p.m.

Ontario partners with First Nations Technical Services Corporation to address climate change

Ontario is putting its new Climate Change Strategy into action by investing $13 million in two initiatives to help Indigenous communities address climate change and support economic growth.

The province is providing $5 million from the Green Investment Fund to the Ontario Centre for Climate Impacts and Adaptation Resources, in partnership with the Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation. This investment will help provide Indigenous communities with training, tools and infrastructure to address climate change by:

Developing climate change adaptation plans.
