Eagle Lake youth powwow

The Eagle Lake Youth Pow Wow had their festivities inside the Eagle Lake Arena over two days.
The events started with a traditional grand entry followed by the veteran song and a prayer spoken by an Elder.
Dancers ranging from the very young to Elders in traditional regalia weaved a kaleidoscope of colour as they danced to pulsating sounds of the drumming and songs. It was enjoyed by dancers, drummers and spectators who participated. It was a memorable event.

Sioux Lookout seminar tackles addictions

Over 270 people from across northwestern Ontario attended an addictions education awareness seminar in the Sioux Lookout Legion Hall on May 14 and 15.
The seminar, organized by the Sioux Lookout Healthy Community Task Force, included representatives from organizations working in mental health, policing and addiction services, amongst others.
Gabor Mate, author of a book on the bio-physical perspective of addiction called The Hungry Ghost, was the keynote speaker.

Fulfilling a dream: Wahsa graduates 14 students

For graduates such as Roy Fiddler, getting a high school diploma was an especially big accomplishment.
Fiddler was one of 14 mature aged Wahsa graduates who were honoured by over 200 guests at the 22nd annual Wahsa graduation in Sioux Lookout on June 19.
Like his peers, Fiddler was supporting his family and holding down a job while working to fulfill his dream of a high school diploma.

A memorable day of bonding

Overcast weather did not deter the dozens of people who joined together on Front Street to celebrate Aboriginal Day in Sioux Lookout.
A Sunrise Ceremony held at the Nishnawbe Gamik Friendship Centre started off the events. As the day progressed the crowd gathered to participate in the dedication ceremony of seven grandfather rocks that have been placed in Centennial Park.

Eagle Lake hosts one of their largest pow wows

Over 1500 people, 31 drums and over 300 dancers attended the 31st Annual pow wow held at Eagle Lake First Nation during the Civic Holiday long weekend.
Many people arrived days before to setup camp by the lake, a bivouac of countless tents stretched along the shoreline to the edge of the arbour on either side. People gathered from many different First Nation communities throughout Ontario and Manitoba, to celebrate, catch up with distant friends and families and to meet new ones.

The Medicine Bear comes to Sioux Lookout

Sioux Mountain Public School was host to a workshop put on by the Kahawi Dance Theatre.
The workshop and a performance at the Queen Elizabeth High School in the evening by the troupe were part of the Kids Kaleidoscope Series which promotes the performing arts in northern Ontario and was organised by Michelle Diston, the school secretary who is also programmer for the series and Dorothy Broderick, marketing manager for the project.
