Crystal Shawanda rocks Lac Seul

As a performer, Crystal Shawanda brings warmth, vitality and a lot of energy to every performance she does and her Dec. 7 concert in Lac Seul was no exception.
The audience consisted of people both young and old who cheered and applauded every song she did. Performing songs ranging from her new single, “Closer” to the haunting ballad “You Can’t Let Go,” Shawanda also included many others from her wide-ranging repertoire including, “My Roots Are Showing” and “I’ll be Home for Christmas.”

High school reinforces traditional harvesting

Pelican Falls First Nations High School located just outside Sioux Lookout, is unique in the fact that it combines a formal school curriculum with traditional teachings. One of the courses they offer is the traditional harvesting program that consists of components such as trapping, snaring and harvesting of traditional foods and medicines.

Winning just half the battle

Elvis Trout and Derek Maud, coaches of the Lac Seul Bantam hockey team, are trying to teach their players life skills as well as hockey skills while building a successful team. Their efforts paid off last week, as the Lac Seul bantams captured the Little Bands championship. Trout and Maud spoke to Wawatay News about hockey, life and coaching.

Pelican Falls celebrates 13th annual powwow

Despite the overcast weather conditions, nearly 500 people attended the 13th annual Pow-Wow at Pelican Falls on April 20 and 21.
People came from various destinations to participate in the elaborate festive celebration.
Lola Goodwin, one of the organizers, said about 150 people came to the powwow from out of town to join the students and staff at the school during the powwow.
“We had a lot of help, we had Glen Whiskeychan’s exchange group from Toronto helping us move things and bringing food over,” Goodwin said.

Reflecting on SLAAMB’s foundation

In November 1991, the Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board (SLAAMB) was formed to improve the chances of First Nations people living in and around Sioux Lookout and the Northern communities to gain employment and training. The idea was formed and initiated by Bob Bruyere, who had previously been employed as the native employment counsellor for Canada Employment Immigration Commission.

Sweet aroma of success

On April 5, the doors of the new Tim Horton’s in Sioux Lookout opened to the public. The business is owned and operated by Lac Seul First Nation and the proprietors are Tabatha Jourdain and Les Carpenter. Geoff Shields caught up with Jourdain during a lull in an otherwise very hectic pace of the business and asked her about how things have been progressing since they opened.

Overcoming challenges on the road to success

Over 300 people relatives and friends attended the 2013 graduation ceremony at Pelican Falls High School on May 14, to celebrate the success of northern students who overcame so many challenges to get their education.
One of the graduates was Arlena Neekan of Mishkeegogamang, who summed up the feelings of her peers when she described what graduation day was like.
“I’m very excited, shaking,” Neekan said. “It feels like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Now I don’t have to worry about anything.”

Lac Seul opposing Big Falls hydro project

Lac Seul First Nation has decided not to support construction of a hydro-electric power plant at Big Falls on the Trout River, after concerns were raised by a number of local residents over the affects a dam would have the area’s cultural heritage.
The First Nation’s change in position comes after Lac Seul had originally agreed to partner on the three to four megawatt hydro dam with Horizon Energy, and potentially Grassy Narrows First Nation and Wabauskang First Nation.
