2020 and the Coronavirus: A date with a deadly virus

Publisher’s Note

Excuse my absence for the past few months, between year-end duties, Coronavirus and working from home, it's been an unusual time to say the least. After four months on lockdown working daily to avoid a fear filled virus called the Coronavirus, cabin fever has set in. We are all missing family and friend’s intimate interactions and conversations. Basically, we are missing hugs and handshakes.

In the beginning, all we knew, hasn’t changed. According to the Service Canada website these are the symptoms and tools to combat the virus: symptoms of human Coronaviruses can take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to the virus; be very mild or more serious; vary from person to person. Coronaviruses are most commonly spread from an infected person through: respiratory droplets when you cough or sneeze; close personal contact; such as touching or shaking hands; touching something with the virus on it, then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands. These viruses are not known to spread through ventilation systems or through water.
And we’re all aware that the best way to prevent the spread of infections is to: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, especially with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with people who are sick; cough and sneeze into your sleeve and not your hands; practice physical distancing at all times; stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others; and wear a non-medical mask or face covering, made with at least two layers of tightly woven fabric, constructed to completely cover the nose and mouth without gaping, and secured to the head by ties or ear loops, to protect the people and surfaces around you.

The Government of Canada has also implemented an Emergency Order under the Quarantine Act for everyone who is entering Canada by air, sea or land must stay home for 14 days in order to limit the spread of COVID-19. The 14-day period begins on the day you enter Canada. If you have travelled and have no symptoms, you must quarantine (self-isolate). If you have travelled and have symptoms, you must isolate.

These were the basic reactions from health professionals to keep each and every one of us safe from harm of this deadly disease. Although, as with anything in life, there are always those who are contrary and have opposing opinions to the facts. The principle idea of the contrary persons argument is: “How can we trust a governing body that has been lying to citizens since its inception.”

Some people believe that COVID-19 isn’t real because hospital parking lots are empty. Coronavirus deniers are declaring this pandemic a hoax due parking lots being empty, when in reality visitors for most non-COVID patients have been told to stay home and potential COVID-19 patients are discouraged from admitting themselves to emergency rooms.

Some others believe that COVID-19 is caused by 5G networks. This stems from the fact that Wuhan China is where it’s believed the virus originated from, which was also the test pilot city for 5G cell coverage. Coronavirus deniers believe that 5G cell networks can weaken the immune system and make it more difficult to breathe.

In a more obscure article, the conspiracy that Corona is alien was explained according to Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology. He claimed Covid-19 arrived on earth via a fireball from space that burnt up in China last October. This theory gained mainstream media notoriety when the Daily Mail covered this story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8104085/Scientist-claime...

The comet Neowise made the list of conspiracy theories also. It was thought that governments of world had a real viable fear that comet Neowise was heading directly for earth for an imminent collision that could be catastrophic for most of the Earth. The principle of this theory is that “if” global citizens knew about the comet hurdling through space to deliver death to the Earth, people would go mad! Mob mentality would run amuck through the planet, and the elite would fear that the have-nots of the world, which equated to approximately 90% of the population, would storm the castles so to speak.

The most outlandish conspiracy theory is that the Covid-19 vaccine will contain a microchip fulfilling a Bible prophecy. The mark of the beast will be in the vaccine. It is written in Revelation 13:16-18: also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

The new normal, seems to be the new programming for society. Celebrities and advertisements seem to be spending a lot of time convincing us that we’re now in a new normal. Also, that this new normal will have been the ‘TSN turning point’ for our society, and that we will not notice this new norm until it has become the old norm and the life we once knew has changed dramatically. So much so that Gen-Xer’s will be the last generation to know what freedom looked and felt like in our old society. What isn’t new is the unspoken issues in our communities.

It appears that many if the community’s historic issues and concerns have hit the back-burner.  The communities that are already burdened with limited health care and faced with drug and alcohol addictions must work harder to defeat Covid-19, while trying to relieve community citizens of the everyday issues. It is just one more strain on already strained First Nation communities. Where do we go from here? How can we repair the issues the government has historically created in the north, so that our people are healthy, prosperous and happy?

In Timmins, we have had more deaths from suicide and overdoses than we have had from Corona. In one fatal night we had eight overdoses with four deaths. If the isolation wasn’t enough, the four deaths brought four families and umpteen friends into a sad state of mental health, which only perpetuates addiction and mental health issues. This has also contributed to the disintegration of family life and further individuation of our citizens.

Personally, my situation as single man living alone, is trying to say the worst thing that has occurred is the loss of my mother. Not due to death, but as she is in the late stages of Alzheimer, my mother no longer recognizes her children. The memories of giving birth to seven kids is gone, never to return. Corona stole my mother and took the last few precious moments of lucidity she had and set it free in the wind. She no longer knows us, and no longer knows herself, this is our family’s new normal.
