Missanabie Cree First Nation has moved forward in their quest to return to their homelands by successfully negotiating a land transfer agreement with the government of Ontario.
The agreement will result in the transfer of 15 square miles of land, which is part of Missanabie Cree’s traditional territory back to the First Nation. According to a press release, this is only a partial fulfillment of lands the community was entitled to receive under Treaty 9.
The community will be celebrating this land transfer agreement at the Missanabie Cree First Nation Annual Gathering Aug. 17 at Island View Camp in Missanabie, Ontario.
