NAPS officers busy in November

Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) have stopped a bootleg alcohol shipment, made a drug bust and responded to a case of arson in the first half of November.
NAPS received a confidential tip about suspicious packages on a plane destined for Kashechewan First Nation on Nov. 2.
The Kashechewan band council was notified, which resulted in $14,900 of alcohol being seized. The alcohol varied between 750 ml bottles and 1.75 litre bottles of various types of alcohol. The seized liquor was handed over to police, and the matter is still under investigation with no charges laid at this time.
NAPS Drug Enforcement Unit along with members of the Neskantaga Detachment and the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act warrant at a residence located on the Neskantaga First Nation on Nov. 9.
The search resulted in a seizure of Oxycodone and $1,455 in cash. The total northern street value for the seized Oxycodone is worth approximately $19,250.
Isabel Peggy Sakanee, 32, Ryan Wesley Moonias, 27, and a female youth of Neskantaga First Nation have each been charged with one count of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking. Sakanee and the female youth have both been released on conditions and will appear in court on March 8, 2012. Moonias is being held in custody pending a remand hearing based on other outstanding charges.
NAPS began an arson investigation after a police service vehicle was set on fire outside a detachment member's residence in Eabametoong (Fort Hope) First Nation on Nov. 10.
The officer had to evacuate his family and call the Eabametoong Fire Department, but the police vehicle fire caused several small explosions and damage to the officer's residence.
The arson investigation led to the arrest of Felton Earl Sakanee, 23 who has been charged with one count of Mischief Causing Danger to Life, one count of Arson, and three counts of Breach of Probation. Clyde Mitchell Wabosse, 20 was also charged with one count of Mischief Causing Danger to Life and one count of Arson.
