The federal and provincial governments have announced about $2.1 million in funding to build a new police station in Sandy Lake.
“This new facility will result in better working conditions for the police officers of the Sandy Lake First Nation, and a safer community for the people they serve,” said Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro. “The McGuinty government is committed to the health and safety of First Nations police officers and will continue to work with our First Nations partners to build modern and sustainable policing services.”
The Ontario investment of $1,016,640 is part of the Open Ontario plan to strengthen communities across the province, while the federal investment of $1,101,360 is part of $15 million in funding provided for improving First Nations policing infrastructure under Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“Today’s announcement will deliver a boost to the local economy and help to better ensure the safety of the Sandy Lake First Nation community through the construction of modern policing infrastructure,” said Kenora MP Greg Rickford on behalf of Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, as well as effective partnerships with provinces, our government is delivering better tools so our law enforcement officers can better protect the safety and security of our communities.”
