Remote communities to get increased Internet access

Seventeen remote First Nation communities in northern Ontario are getting increased Internet access. The announcement was made July 5 by the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines in Sioux Lookout.K-Net Services was granted $2.8 million to improve the electronic infrastructure delivered to the remote First Nations. The investment was provided through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

Youth centre provides social activity

If it wasn’t for New Hope Youth Centre, Dylan Meekis would waste his afternoons watching television and being bored.Instead, the Sandy Lake band member plays board and card games and uses computers with other youth at the Christian centre.“I’ve been coming here since it opened,” the teen said. “I think this a great place to come to. There are all kinds of things to do and keep busy with.”There’s nothing that could stop him from coming to the centre, he said.

Grand Finale for Northern Bands

It’s hard to imagine a better end to the Northern Bands Hockey Tournament for organizer Max Kakepetum.Kakepetum billed the 2006 Northern Bands as a “Grand Finale” for the tournament – the 27th and last one he would organize – and returned the event to its Sioux Lookout birthplace after staging it in Thunder Bay the past few years. All three championship games played Sunday, April 9 were decided by a single goal, two of them in overtime.
