Having spent three days discussing the problem, chiefs from Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Grand Council Treaty 3 declared a call to action to address prescription drug abuse Feb. 12.
This is in response to the individual who replied to my article on
combating drugs in our reserves. See info box below. The first portion
of this letter is dedicated to that individual.
I am Anishnabe from northern Ontario of Eabametoong First Nation. I congratulate Mr. Obama and the American people for electing an African-American to be there president and their openness.
In what was billed as a historic day for Matawa First Nations, the
tribal council signed an agreement with the province Oct. 24 to develop
a consultation protocol for mineral exploration and development on
traditional lands.
Eabametoong community members are anticipating the development of a land use plan for their area.
"We're kind of excited about starting a land use plan," said Chief Charlie O'Keese.
A new initiative announced by the province will require early
consultation and accommodation with First Nations before mining
development and forestry can go ahead.
