Lawrence Martin hosts music awards

Thursday December 14, 2006

Cochrane Mayor Lawrence Martin co-hosted the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards in Toronto Nov. 24.

Dec. 14, 2006: Volume 33 #25

The event is part of the Canadian Aboriginal Festival, which also includes a powwow at the Rogers Centre (formerly the SkyDome).

The music awards were, by all accounts, well received. Martin was reported as having done “a great job” along with fellow co-host and musician Andrea Menard.

Martin is also a musician who lists a Juno Award (for his Wapistan album) and a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award among his past accomplishments.

Gerry McIvor, a member of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, was a finalist for blues album of the year but failed to capture the award.

Jared Sowan of Edmonton, Alta., won the award for his album called Eclectically Yours.
Martin is a Moose Cree First Nation band member, former Mushkegowuk Council grand chief, former mayor of Sioux Lookout and former employee of Wawatay Native Communications Society.
