Job Summary:

Under the direction of SESS Coordinator, the Shibogama off-reserve secondary student support worker is responsible to deliver the student support and education services to all SESS off-reserve secondary students attending NNEC schools and provincial schools. The support worker will ensure the delivery of student support services in education and student safety & well-being while in school.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Adhere to SESS Program Policy & Procedures to ensure compliance and safety and well-being of all students and SESS staff;
 Review and fully understand the Shibogama Personnel Policy as it applies to full-time employees;
 Implement and adhere to the approved Boarding Home Policy & Procedures (recruiting, screening, interviewing, monitoring and expectations, implement emergency boarding homes, and working with boarding home parents etc);
 Conduct interviews with new students to obtain information in order to adequately support and assist them;
 Review and update all students’ files on the data-base as per the Education Assistance form: personal /medical/social/academic history;
 Maintain the filing system that will contain: student information, parents & guardian contact information and policy & procedures;
 Utilize the SESS templates for reporting purposes as per student situation and develop new forms as required in conjunction with the SESS Coordinator.
 Use appropriate program administration forms such as: PO’s, cheque requisition, travel advance, travel claims, and leave forms, etc and maintain your own file;
 Develop alternative emergency contacts with SESS Coordinator in case of emergencies;
 Provide educational & student support services to the students by working with the schools to access tutoring and support services;
 Maintain positive working relationship with boarding home parents and other service providers. (school principals, police, other agencies);
 Provide guidance and initial counseling to the students prior to referring;
 Maintain on-going communication with SESS program, parents, students and communities on a consistent basis using different means;
 Monitor students at schools on a scheduled basis to keep track of each students’ overall performance and attendance through a student tracking system;
 Work closely with the school special education teachers to monitor and support the IEP students on a regular basis;
 Annual school visitations per month at each school and adhere to it for consistency purposes;
 Maintain confidentiality at all times when dealing with the students and parents;
 Use the SESS vehicle for transportation purposes and must keep track of the usage on the log book;
 Responsible to train the on-call casual workers and work closely with them;
 Establish extra-curricular and recreation programs for the students accessing FNSSP funds and other sources;
 Ensure the students are provided the best quality care, support and education services;
 Encourage local community members to spend time with the students when they are in town;
 Perform any other duties as required by SESS program.

Qualifications Required:

 Degree/diploma in social worker and/or experience in the field of education
 SFNC will consider ideal candidates with extensive social services experience and can demonstrate competence in required areas
 Effective communication skills; fluency in Oji-Cree and English an asset
 Possess a valid Driver’s license
 Must be able to travel
