Distracted driving legislation to take full effect in February

January 27, 2010

The three-month grace period of implementing Ontario's distraced driving legislation will come to an end in February. The legislation says cell phones and other hand held communication and entertainment devices are forbidden while driving.

Since the legislation came into effect Oct. 26, officers have issued warnings to drivers using hand held devices. But in some cases police have issued a $125 fine.

There is some leniency in cases of needing to make a 911 (emergency) call.

Police remind drivers that if they would like to take a call to pull off the roadway, do not impede traffic, and park legally.
