Film festival set for Moose Factory
Filmmakers and film enthusiasts will soon journey to the remote island community of Moose Factory, Ont., for the Weeneebeg Aboriginal Film and Video Festival.
January 8, 2009: Volume 36 #1
Scheduled for Feb 17-21, the festival is set to feature 35 films by local, regional, national and international filmmakers.
The festival will showcase short docudramas, animation, documentaries and feature films and will also host a variety of hands-on workshops for aspiring young artists.
Local filmmaker, Victor Linklater, is slated to kick off the festival with a screening of his latest film, In the Sticks.
The film chronicles the history of hockey in Moose Factory, from the 1950s heroes of the outdoor rinks to present day hometown NHL hero, Jonathan Cheechoo, who plays for the San Jose Sharks.
Screenings of short films Sikumi, by Inupiaq filmmaker Andre Maclean, and Incident at Rock Roe, an animated story told in Muscogee Cree, are also included in the evening’s events.
Led by brothers, Paul Rickard, co-founder, and Fred Rickard Jr., artistic director, the festival is a unique artist and community run venture and is entirely free with unlimited access to all screenings, events and workshops.
